Our new media collaboration with Gordon Holden is a thought process on ways to experience data, accessibility pathways, and color. We used data from our publication on shell middens and Narragansett Bay as the subject. Gordon explains a bit about the process:
The midden .gif is our interpretation of "colorful data". This moving image is an abstract take on the duality of art and science. The transition from black and white to color has been known to have a profound affect on the human psyche. As many onlookers that are removed from the process and meaning of the compiled data, there can be little appeal to searching any further for its greater meaning. By adding motion and color to the equation, the viewer's perspective can be drawn to the information in an intriguingly abstract manner.
